Pacific Club Monte Carlo Summer Boat Cruise

The Friday before my Vegas trip I went on my first Pacific Club social event – the annual Monte Carlo Summer Boat Cruise.

It’s been about 20 years since I went on one of these boat cruises. I expected the “Pride of Vancouver” boat to be bigger than it was, but it did have three levels. The top deck was nice, but as soon as the boat started moving it was impossible to stand on it with high heels. And there were MANY high heels being worn by women that night! It also looked like they didn’t change the carpet nor decor in the last 10 years or so.

Everyone seemed happily drunk, but the food selection was pretty scanty. Some Costco finger foods, and then people (including myself) stalked the unnecessarily-heated three food trays until the Indian wraps by Rasoee Indian Kitchen came out, one tray carrying 2 dozen at a time. I nearly got one taken from my hand. Would have been smarter to make all of the wraps and then serve them, as well as label them. I ended up eating a chicken while Leo got a veggie later in the night. The wraps were good, but definitely not enough to be considered a meal.

Launch Party Vancouver 9

With a name like Launch Party, you don’t expect this event to be business-oriented at all.

Launch Party Vancouver (LPV 9) had its 9th edition last night at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Now, you know I’m so out of the loop on this event when I tell you I thought this was the second. I know, I know. I deserve the head shake.

I found out about LPV9 last month from one of the organizers, Sonia Ryan, who I follow on Twitter. As the name indicates, the party is about ‘launching’ new internet-oriented startup companies. Introducing them to the public, as well as attracting investors, collaborators, etc. So although this industry isn’t usually my focus, I do love learning about technology and Vancouver is such a hub of great thinkers & innovators so I had to check it out for myself. Besides, I always see familiar faces at these sorts of events.

Biz event review: Freelance Camp Vancouver

I learned about the first Freelance Camp coming to Vancouver through Minna Van on Twitter, and boy am I glad I went. I logged onto Twitter early in the morning on Saturday May 29th to see what other people were saying (using the hashtag #604freelancecamp) and was relieved to hear that they too were grudgingly getting up early on a Saturday morning to do this!

We were told that the camp would be ‘unconference’ style, meaning that there would be no set sessions until the day of, aside from the lunch ‘Keynote’ type session on making money online, by Michael Kwan and John Chow, who I’ve heard speak about making $40,000/month through his blog in a previous Meetup.com presentation.

Right at 9am all the attendees were invited to pitch a session they wanted to present. (A big thanks to Jeremy Lim who took WAY better photos than my iPhone and captured the moments much more beautifully.)

I was still waking up from my coffee so I gladly let others do their thing. After the agenda was filled, I got to choose between three different sessions in each time slot to go to (The Network Hub used their first floor meeting room, 3rd floor lobby, and 3rd floor meeting rooms as facilities). So, there was never a session that was too full, nor a day of repeated content.

I’m giving away the .TEL digital business card I got (valued at $19.99) because I already have one (sandragarcia.tel) so please leave a comment on this post or Tweet “I’d love to win @mc_marketing’s .TEL digital business card” to win. I’ll be randomly choosing the winner on Wed. night.
